What Is Speed Ramping?

Also called speed ramp, time remapping, ramping, speed up slow down

Speed ramping changes the playback rate of a clip over time rather than applying one fixed speed, so a shot can slide from normal motion into slow motion and back within a single take. The ramp itself is the effect, because the change of rate is what the audience feels.

What varies, and why the variation is the point

A constant speed change is a simple thing: play a clip at half rate and everything is slower. A speed ramp is not that. It varies the rate across the clip, so the shot begins at normal speed, decelerates into a moment, holds there, and accelerates back out.

The effect lives in the transitions rather than in the slow section. A shot that is uniformly slow reads as a stylistic choice about the whole shot. A shot that slows down in front of you reads as attention: something is being singled out as it happens. That difference is why the technique is used to mark impacts, decisions and peaks of movement, and why it feels like emphasis rather than like an effect.

Sound has to follow the same curve or the illusion collapses. Audio pitched down with the picture sounds obviously processed, so the usual approach is to duck the location sound during the slow section and carry a separate designed layer across it.

The frame rate requirement

This is the part that gets skipped and it determines whether the result looks professional.

Playback rate is a ratio between how many frames were captured per second and how many are shown per second. Shoot at 120fps, show at 24fps, and you have five real frames for every frame of screen time, so a ramp down to twenty percent speed uses recorded material throughout.

Ramp slower than the capture supports and the software has to invent frames that were never there. Frame blending cross-fades neighbours and produces ghosting. Optical flow interpolation warps pixels along estimated motion and produces bending around fast edges, thin objects and anything that occludes something else. Both artefacts appear at the slowest point of the ramp, which is exactly where the audience is looking most carefully.

Designing the ramp

  • Place it on the action. Ramp down into the peak of a movement, not before it.
  • Keep it short. Under half a second for each transition. A slow ramp reads as a technical glitch rather than as emphasis.
  • Use it once. Two ramps in a sequence are a style, three are a tic.
  • Watch the motion blur. Footage shot for slow motion needs a faster shutter, and blur baked in at normal rate becomes obvious smearing when stretched.

Doing it with generated shots

Generated clips have a specific limitation here: they arrive at a fixed frame rate, usually 24 or 30, with no extra frames to spend on slowing down. Ramping such a clip directly means interpolating from the start.

The workable route has two steps. Generate the action as one clean continuous movement with a single obvious peak, since a ramp needs a moment to be built around and a clip with three things happening in it has nowhere to sit. Then run frame interpolation to multiply the frame count before doing any time remapping, rather than letting the editing software interpolate as a side effect of the speed change. Doing it as an explicit step gives you a chance to inspect the generated frames and re-roll if the interpolation warped something.

Two prompt details make interpolation easier. Ask for a clean, uncluttered background, because flow estimation fails around busy detail. And ask for a static camera, since interpolating a moving camera and a moving subject at once is where the artefacts multiply.
