Clapping Cat Meme: What It Is and How to Make Your Own Pet Clap
A black cat sits up on a tiled floor. It looks at the camera, pulls a wide, toothy, oddly human grin and starts to clap. Slowly. Like it has just watched you make a terrible decision and wants you to know it saw.
That is the clapping cat, one of the strangest and most reused clips of the autumn. This post covers where the clapping cat meme came from, what happens in those few seconds, and how to put your own cat or dog in the starring role from a single photo.
Where did the clapping cat meme come from?
The clip was made in late September 2026 by the creator Aleksandr Kim (@merkurianin), with his own black cat. The cat is real; the grin and the clapping were added with AI. He posted it as a joke about handing his cat a treat, and within two weeks the post had passed 40 million plays.
What turned a funny pet video into a meme was what came next. People cut the cat into their own videos as the one applauding something questionable: a teacher taking a phone away, a friend's worst idea, a bad parking job. The creator even shared a clean version of the clip for others to use. And pet owners started asking the obvious question: what would my cat look like doing that?
The clip, clap by clap
Our Clapping Cat template keeps the scene people recognize: the same beige tiled floor, the same pink basket in the corner, the same view from above with the owner's legs at the bottom of the frame. Only the cat changes. Your pet takes its place.
In about four seconds, your pet sits up, throws its paws in the air with a wide grin, then claps slowly in front of its chest, and finishes with a big paw swing towards the camera.

And in motion. The animations in this post are silent; the real clip keeps the sound of the clapping.

Which pet photo works best
The template needs one photo of one pet. A few things make a big difference:
- The whole body in view, ears to paws. The clip shows your pet sitting up, so the model needs to see its legs and paws, not just its face.
- A sharp face in good light. The grin is the whole joke, and it is built on your pet's own face.
- A photo taken from a little above, the way you look down at your pet. That matches the angle of the clip.
- One animal per photo. With two, the template cannot tell which one should clap.
Your pet's breed, fur colour and markings carry over. The background of your photo does not: the clip always happens on the same tiled floor, so it reads as part of the same meme.

Cats come out closest to the original. Dogs work too. Here is a golden retriever taking its turn.

How to make your clapping cat video with ZOOOP
- Open the Clapping Cat template and upload one photo of your cat or dog.
- Keep 480p, or pick 720p if you want it sharper.
- Hit generate and download the clip.
No prompt, no editing. The floor, the camera and the rhythm of every clap are already in place.
What surprised us while building the template
Human hands were the first thing to go. In the original, the cat claps with what look like human hands. Our first test kept that idea, and on a fluffy grey cat it was much creepier than funny: bare pink hands sticking out of fur. The version we shipped has your pet clap with its own furry paws, while the grin stays.

The big swing at the end is the hard part. Near the end of the clip, the paw comes towards the camera in a fast, blurry swing. In some of our dog tests, that one moment turned back into a human hand, most often on a short-legged corgi. Cats got it right almost every time. If your dog's clip comes out with a hand in it, generate again.
The room has to stay the same. In early tests with dog photos, the dog brought its own living room along and the tiled floor disappeared. It no longer looked like the clapping cat. The template now keeps the original scene every time, so whatever pet you use, people recognize the meme straight away.
