What Is a Long Exposure?

Also called slow shutter, light trails, time exposure

A long exposure holds the shutter open long enough that moving subjects record as trails or smooth blur while static ones stay sharp. It turns a duration into a single image, which is why water becomes silk, crowds disappear and headlights become continuous lines.

What the technique actually records

A normal photograph tries to freeze one moment. A long exposure gives up on that and records a span of time instead, adding up everything that happened while the shutter was open.

What survives that summing depends on how much each thing moved. Anything stationary accumulates the same light in the same place across the whole duration, so it comes out sharp and correctly exposed. Anything moving spreads its light across many positions, so it appears either as a trail, if it is bright against a dark background, or as a smooth featureless blur, if it is a surface like water or cloud. Anything moving fast enough and dim enough disappears altogether, which is how you photograph a crowded square with nobody in it.

The image is therefore not a distortion of reality but a different sampling of it. It shows where things were over a period, which is information no instant can carry.

Durations and what they do

  • Around half a second. Waterfalls and streams smooth out while keeping some texture. Handheld is already impossible.
  • Two to ten seconds. The classic city look. Vehicle lights become continuous lines and pedestrians turn to ghosts.
  • Fifteen to sixty seconds. Water flattens to glass, clouds stretch into streaks, and the sky picks up direction.
  • Several minutes. Moving people vanish entirely. Requires strong neutral density filtration in any daylight.
  • Hours. Star trails, which need an equatorial understanding of what the sky is doing rather than just a slow shutter.

Two practical requirements run through all of them. The camera must be genuinely locked down, because the effect depends on sharp static elements contrasted against smeared moving ones. And in daylight you need neutral density filtration, since even at a small aperture and low sensitivity there is far too much light for a multi-second frame.

Generated images fail at this in a specific way: a request for a long exposure often produces a uniformly soft picture, because the model treats the phrase as a blur style rather than as a physical process.

The fix is to describe both states explicitly. Say what is trailed and say what is sharp, in the same sentence: headlights drawn into continuous red and white light trails, buildings perfectly sharp. That contrast is the whole subject, and models will not supply it on their own.

One more useful lever: pick a time of day that makes the exposure plausible. Dusk and blue hour are when these images are usually made, and asking for one at midday tends to produce something that reads as a filter, because the model has seen far fewer genuine examples in bright daylight.

How long is long?
It depends on how fast the subject moves. Half a second smooths a waterfall, two to ten seconds draws vehicle light trails, thirty seconds flattens choppy water to glass, and several minutes removes moving crowds almost completely. There is no threshold, only the relationship between duration and subject speed.
Why do you need an ND filter?
Because in daylight there is far too much light for a slow shutter, and stopping the aperture down only goes so far before diffraction softens the image. A neutral density filter cuts light without changing colour, which is what makes multi-second exposures possible outside of dusk and night.
What is the difference between this and motion blur?
They are the same physics at different scales. Motion blur usually describes the small smear within a normal frame that makes movement read as continuous. A long exposure extends the same effect until it becomes the subject of the image, and moving things stop being objects and become traces.
Why does everything need to be locked down?
Because any camera movement blurs the static parts too, and the whole effect depends on the contrast between sharp and smeared. A tripod is not optional. On long durations even pressing the shutter can introduce shake, which is why remote release or a timer is standard.
