Where the smear comes from
A frame is not an instant. The shutter opens, light accumulates for a measurable period, and anything that moves during that period is recorded across every position it occupied. The result is a streak whose length is proportional to how far the subject travelled while the shutter was open.
This is usually described through shutter angle, which is a ratio rather than a duration: the fraction of each frame's time that the shutter is open. A 180 degree shutter is open for half the frame, which at 24fps means 1/48 of a second. Because it is a ratio, the same shutter angle produces a consistent look at any frame rate, which is why crews think in angles rather than in fractions of a second.
Why the audience needs it
Cinema shows 24 discrete images per second and asks the viewer to perceive continuous movement. Blur is what makes that work. Each frame overlaps slightly with where the subject was and where it is going, so the eye interpolates smoothly between them.
Remove it and the illusion weakens. Consecutive frames become separate snapshots with visible gaps between positions, and the result is judder: movement that reads as a rapid series of stills rather than as motion. Panning is where this shows up first, which is why a fast-shutter pan across a textured background is one of the most unpleasant things you can put on screen.
Push it far the other way and detail dissolves. Very slow shutters on moving subjects give the shape of movement without any information about what moved, which is a legitimate effect and not a default.
The useful settings
- 180 degrees. The standard. Reads as normal, and every audience is calibrated to it.
- 90 degrees or faster. Crisp and harsh. Used for violence, sport and anything that should feel immediate rather than composed.
- 270 to 360 degrees. Heavy smear, dreamlike or drugged. Hard to cut with normal coverage.
- Fast shutter for slow motion. If footage will be retimed slowly in post, shoot with less blur, because blur in the original cannot be removed and becomes obvious when stretched.
Prompting it
Video models fail in both directions, and the two failures need different prompts.
If the output strobes, ask for the blur explicitly and attach it to what moves: natural motion blur on the wheels and trailing arm. Naming the moving parts is more effective than asking for blur in general, because a general request often gets applied to the entire frame.
If the output smears everything, add the technical framing instead: 24fps with a 180 degree shutter. Shutter language pulls the model toward footage shot conventionally, and it implies blur on moving subjects while leaving static areas sharp.
Background treatment is worth stating separately, since it is where the effect is most visible: background lights stretched into short streaks. This also gives the model a length cue, which is the part it most often gets wrong. And for stills, remember that a photograph can carry motion blur on a subject while everything else stays sharp, so specifying which element is moving matters even more there than in video.
