The number and the two overlays
Take a line and split it so the whole is to the larger part as the larger part is to the smaller. That ratio is roughly 1.618, written as phi. It appears in a lot of unrelated places, which is why it accumulated more mystique than it can support.
Two overlays get built from it. The phi grid divides the frame into columns of about 38, 24 and 38 percent instead of three equal thirds, giving four intersections that sit a little nearer the centre. The golden spiral nests golden rectangles inside each other and traces a curve tightening toward one corner, with the subject placed at the tightest point.
The grid version is a small refinement of a habit most people already have. The spiral version is a genuinely different idea, because it is about the path the eye takes rather than a single placement.
Where the history goes wrong
It is worth being straight about this, because most articles on the subject are not. The claim that Renaissance painters, the Parthenon and the Mona Lisa were all built on phi is largely reconstruction after the fact. Spirals get drawn onto existing works, resized and rotated until something lines up, and any sufficiently flexible overlay will eventually touch something interesting in a good composition.
That does not make the tool useless. It makes the justification for it different. It works when it works because unequal division reads as more dynamic than equal division, and because a curve gives the eye a route. Those are perceptual facts. The mysticism is decoration, and shooting to a grid you believe in is worth more than shooting to a grid you can prove.
Using the spiral in practice
The productive way to use it is backwards. Instead of overlaying a spiral and looking for a place to put the subject, find the curve that already exists in the scene and shoot so it leads where you want.
- Architecture. Spiral staircases, curved ramps, arched colonnades.
- Bodies. A seated figure, a dancer, an arm reaching across the frame. The body naturally forms an inward curve.
- Landscape. A river or a path bending through the frame, with the subject at the far end of the bend.
- Small scale. Shells, coiled cable, whisked liquid, a spiral of ingredients on a plate.
Put the payoff at the tight end of the curve, not the wide end. A spiral that unwinds away from the subject sends the eye out of the frame, which is the same failure as a leading line pointing at nothing.
What models can and cannot do with this
Naming the geometry does not work. Ask for golden ratio composition and you get a plausible photograph placed wherever the model felt like placing it, sometimes with an actual spiral drawn into the image as a graphic, which is not the request.
What works is describing the curve as content and the destination as an object:

If a layout genuinely has to hit a mark, do it after generation. Generate wider than the final frame, drop a grid overlay in an editor, and crop. That takes seconds, is exact, and does not depend on a model understanding proportion, which none of them currently do.
