Why position matters more than brightness
Exposure is a solved problem: any source can be dimmed or moved until the image is bright enough. What cannot be fixed afterwards is direction. The key light decides which planes of a face catch light and which ones fall away, and that decision is the entire difference between a portrait that flatters and one that unsettles.
This is also why the key is defined by role rather than by wattage. A small lamp in a dark room is a key. Sunlight through a window is a key. On an exterior at midday the sun is your key whether you asked for it or not, and the only tools left are where you point the actor and what you bounce back into the shadow side.
The classic placements
Portrait practice has names for the common positions, and they are worth knowing because they describe outcomes rather than angles:
- Butterfly (Paramount). Key high and frontal, casting a small shadow under the nose. Flattering on strong cheekbones, unkind to deep eye sockets.
- Loop. Around 30 to 45 degrees off axis and slightly above. The nose shadow loops down toward the corner of the mouth without touching it. The most generally useful position on most faces.
- Rembrandt. Roughly 45 degrees off axis and 45 degrees up. A small triangle of light appears on the shadow cheek, no wider than the eye and no longer than the nose. Sculpted and slightly severe.
- Split. Key at a full 90 degrees. Half the face lit, half in shadow. Reads as conflict or concealment and is almost never neutral.
- Under-light. Below eye level, pointing up. Unnatural in daylight terms, which is why it is used for menace, or motivated by a fire, a phone screen or footlights.
Short lighting means the key falls on the side of the face turned away from camera, which narrows the face and increases modelling. Broad lighting puts it on the near side, which widens the face and flattens it. Between those two choices and the five positions above, most portrait decisions are already made.
Hardness, height and the eyes
Two knobs get confused constantly. Intensity is how bright the source is. Hardness is how sharp the shadow edge is, and it depends only on the size of the source as seen from the subject. A bare bulb across the room is hard; a bedsheet-sized frame at arm's length is soft. Distance changes both, which is why moving a lamp closer makes it softer and brighter at the same time.
Height is where beginners lose faces. Every degree the key rises, the eye sockets get deeper, and past about 45 degrees the eyes go dark and the subject stops reading as present. If the setup needs the key high, buy the catchlight back with a bounce at chest level rather than dropping the whole instrument.
Prompting the key in AI generation
Models respond to two kinds of instruction here, and mixing them works better than either alone: a named pattern, and a physical consequence.

The most common failure is direction drift. Ask for a side key and you will often get a face lit from one side with the cast shadows going the other way, because the model is composing plausible-looking regions rather than tracing light. Naming one shadow explicitly, on the wall, the nose or the floor, forces the geometry to agree. In video, add that the direction holds, because a light that starts at frame right can quietly walk to frontal over a four second clip.
If you are working from a supplied first frame, do not re-describe the key at all. The frame already fixes it, and a competing description is one of the fastest ways to make a clip drift off its own reference.
